Speach @ the Memorial of Keib Thomas
Its a great honor to be here today celebrating the live of someone who was practicing community engagement even long before the term became popular.
When I first met Thomas as he allowed us to call him was in 2006, by the time I went to SAVO looking for adv ice for our project CARNIVAL OF INDEPENDENCES, over a cup of tea this tall guy wearing a bandana, sat next to us and said “ Don’t worry we are here to help you” and from that single moment he became our adviser , interpreter and supporter , he came with us to different meetings with Southwark Police and Events Team, and I remember him saying to us “don’t worry just listen and then just ask me back what you don’t understand”. His easy going personality and his warm words lasting forever.
Also I was lucky enough to be with him in the last SAVO’S TOUR and I remember clearly how concerned he was of not leaving anyone behind, and just making sure that everyone was looking the same way when he explained the history of the corners of Southwark, when the bus pass by.
Now days I am working in CAS as a community development worker, to find out that Keib Thomas was one of the first person who approached the Latin Community, there are some groups who remember the “hippy police” that used to come to visit us ...people mentioned as well how he try to say some words in Spanish and how friendly he was. So all this things made of him the role model we want to follow. But believe me is not easy and that is why I questioned myself how he made it. Working with people involves lots of time, energy and requires to have a good attitude in life, and he made it all well, and that is why we all are here today, because he passed on us his love for people and to his beliefs in a better world for all. Thank you and as we said in Spanish Gracias Amigo @ Lina M Usma
